That Extra Degree

SERMON: 212° - That Extra Degree!

TEXT: Revelation 3:14-22
14 "And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: 'The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation.
15 "'I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot!
16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.
17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see.
19 Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.
20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
21 The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.
22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Introduction: At 211° water is hot. At 212°, it boils. And with boiling comes steam. Steam can power an engine. An engine that can transport goods all over the world. One degree makes all the difference.
Did you know?
The average margin of victory for the last 25 years in all major golf tournaments was less than three strokes?

The 2008 US Men’s Swimming Relay won the gold medal by .08 of a second? Literally, by a fingertip!

The average margin of victory at the Indy 500 for the last 10 years has been 1.54 seconds? The difference in first and second place? $657,000! One degree can make all the difference, indeed. Think for a moment what God can do with an extra degree from us, his children. The words of Revelation 3 ring loudly on this subject. God wants our all! He demands it! We in turn will be blessed in so many ways from giving Him our all. Here are three areas where we can apply that extra degree:

212° of ATTITUDE. 1 Peter 4:7-11 - 7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.
8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.
9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.
10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace:
11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies-in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

The key to having the mind of Christ...
 Be Serious and Watchful
 Love Each Other Deeply
 When you speak, Speak the Words of God
 Use Your Talents to the Glory of God
 Realize, when our Responsibilities grow our Rights shrink! (John 15:13)

212° of SERVICE. Romans 12:9-13 -
9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.
10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.
12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

Ephesians 4:11-12:

11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,

 God has given us opportunities and the abilities to serve in so many
ways! He desires our service. He wants us to serve each other and Him
out of love. A love that can show the world that we are His.
 The Lord’s Church can not function without your service!
 Make note of the opportunities you’ll have this week to serve.

212° of EVANGELISM. Matt 28:18-20,
Acts 4:19-20:
19 But Peter and John answered them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge,
20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard."

Acts 17:6 And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, "These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also.

 2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.
 It’s time to stop going to church... and start being the church!
 We have a command, a responsibility and the privilege of bringing the Word to the world

Conclusion: We serve a great God! We can not begin to imagine all He can do when we give that extra degree in attitude, service, evangelism, or in other ways! Let’s strive to live the 212° lifestyle!
