Program: Your Spiritual Check-up 06

"Hello, I’m Dr. Mark Landis and it’s time for your check up.......your spiritual check-up!"  

Today it’s time to check your hearing. Obviously you can hear physically or you wouldn’t be listening to me now.  So let’s check your more important hearing today. . . .your spiritual hearing!  Are you hard of hearing when it comes to Spiritual matters?  Jesus tells us in Matthew that that can happen.  Listen to verse 15:

For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.'

When it comes to listening to the word of God, are you hard of hearing?  I hope not.  I hope that you’re not like that person who said he didn’t want to be confused with the truth because he had already made up his mind.  Lots of people are like that.  If you’ve been like that, I hope you’ll listen today to the words of Jesus and change your hearing.  Wouldn’t it be great if we could all have the praise of Christ that He gave in the very next verse when he said:

¹⁶ "But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear;

Do you have blessed ears? Are they working the way they should? Proverbs 1:5 says:

⁵ A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel

I hope you’ll decide to hear the words of God because that way you can increase your learning.  You can become wise.  You probably remember the parable Jesus told about the man with good hearing.  We don’t call it the parable of good hearing.  We call it the parable of the wise man, but listen and you’ll see that Jesus said that was what made the man wise:

⁴⁷ Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: ⁴⁸ He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock Luke 6:47-48 (NKJV)

Do you want a faith that can’t be shaken?  If you do then you’ll want to have good hearing.  After all the Bible says in Romans 10:17, “ So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Storms of life will come.  They are inevitable.  When they do come you’ll be ready if you are wise and have good hearing. If you have good hearing and use it then you’ll have strong faith.  You’ll have a solid foundation in Christ and nothing will be able to harm your faith, and that’s a very good position to have. Heb 2:1 says:

Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.

Don’t just casually listen to the word of God.  Pay earnest heed to it.  That means to pay really close attention.  That’s what keeps us from drifting away from God.  Having good hearing will help you in your Christian life. It won’t just help you.  It can help others too.  People with good spiritual hearing are the ones who end up bearing fruit for Jesus.  Remember what Jesus said in Mark 4:20 (NKJV)

²⁰ But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred."

Do you have good hearing? If you do then you won’t just listen. You’ll hear the word and accept it. Then you’ll put it to use and start bearing fruit.  When our physical hearing gets bad, it is hard to fix.  Fortunately it isn’t hard to fix our spiritual hearing.  We just have to open up our hearts and make up our mind to listen to the word of God with an open mind.  Don’t have a closed mind.  Don’t be hard of hearing. I hope you’ll decide today to have good spiritual hearing!
