OUR ONLY GUIDE
The Bible Is Our Only Guide
Purpose: To understand that the Bible is sufficient as our guide.
A. It is the best selling book of all times. Took over 1,600 years to write by over 40 writers.
It is not a science book, but tells of scientific fact before we discovered it. It is not a
history book, but tells of civilizations that skeptics thought were made up until they
B. The Bible has been attacked by governments, individuals and religions, but it still remains
today. Voltaire, the noted French infidel who died in 1778, said that 100 years from his
time Christianity would be swept from existence and passed into history. But Voltaire died
and Christianity flourished. 50 years after his death the Geneve Bible Society used
Voltaire’s press and house to produce stacks of Bibles.
II. Guide, standard, authority
A. Without some standards chaos would exist. There are multiple standards in the religious
world today with very little doctrine in true agreement. Chaos exists.
B. We appeal to all to return to the Bible as the only standard, guide and authority in life
and religion. Col. 3:17. “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the
Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
C. Someone once said, “If a human creed contains more than the Bible it contains too
much; if it contains less than the Bible it contains too little; but if it contains the same thing
as the Bible we do not need it anyway.”
D. David said “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Ps. 119:105.
E. Paul said, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ.” Rom. 1:16.
F. Many are ashamed of the gospel/Bible because the world is opposed to much of what
the Bible proclaims. 1 Cor. 5 (sexual immorality) is a good example of how the early
church became more prideful of being accepted by Corinth/world than by Jesus.
III. How the Bible guides us:
A. If one accepts that the Bible is our only guide, then how do we distinguish what applies
to us and what does not? Old vs. New covenants, etc.
B. Command or direct statement
