CHURCH MISSION

WHAT IS THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH?
Mark 16:15-16

Purpose: To review what the church is to be doing.

I. Introduction:
    A. Sometimes we forget what our mission really is. How many times have you gone to the
store only to have forgotten what you went to purchase? The mission wasn’t to go to the
store, rather, it was to purchase something specific.
    B. Today we can also miss the mission of the church. The mission is not simply to open the
doors or keep the current programs alive. It isn’t merely to say that we have assembled to
worship. Simply put, the mission is to evangelize, edify and be benevolent toward others.
Through these, we glorify God and Jesus.. Eph. 3:20-21.
    C. It is possible to forget our mission at times. We need to be reminded of it.

II. Jesus is the pattern for us:
     A. Matt. 4:23. Jesus went TEACHING, PREACHING, and HEALING.
     B. Here we find edification, evangelism and benevolence in the example of Jesus.
     C. Jesus in Matt. 9:36-38 shows compassion on the multitude. Matt. 10– go preach and heal
the sick. Evangelize and do benevolence.

III. Evangelism - preaching and outreach:
      A. Evangelism is central to the mission of the church. Churches that do not evangelize will ie.
But not all churches even bother with spreading the good news. Sad.
      B. Luke 19:10, Jesus came to seek and save the lost. He directs us to do the same.
      C. Matt. 28:19; Mark 16:15-16. Not just for preachers. For all to consider.
      D. Acts 8:4. Church scattered about, but went preaching the word.
      E. The gospel saves. Rom. 1:16-17; 1 Cor. 15:1-4.
      F. All need the gospel. Eph. 3:21; 2:1-5, 12. Some will not accept. 2 Cor. 4:34.
     G. If not preaching/teaching then you can pray (2 Thes. 3:1; Col. 4:3), help materially
          (Phil.4:14-19), and show hospitality (3 John 8).
     H. 2 Tim. 4:1-5. Preach the word!

IV. Edification - teaching, building up the church:
      A. Once a person becomes a Christian they must begin to grow and be encouraged.
      B. Matt. 28:20. Teach them to observe ALL things commanded.
      C. Look to edify the church. 1 Cor. 14:12; 2 Cor. 10:8; 13:10.
      D. Edify as individuals or as the church. Eph. 4:11-12; 15-16; 29-32.
      E. Paul’s actions and word of grace build us up. 2 Cor. 12:19; Acts 20:32.
      F. Avoid evil, hypocrisy, envy, evil speaking, lust, greed, etc. 1 Pet. 2:1-2; 2 Tim. 2:22-23;
