GOD EXPECTS

WHAT DOES GOD EXPECT OF US?

1 Thes. 4:1-2

Purpose: To see how God expects us to obey, grow and work.

I. Introduction:

A. A young teenager sits dejected on the couch in the den. “I don’t

know what you expect out of me. I’m only human you know!”

B. Parents know that children are not perfect. Likewise God

knows that we are not perfect either. But just as parents love,

guide, discipline and encourage their children, God does the same for us.

C. Children are sometimes baffled. What do their parents expect of them?

D. For the Christian, what does God expect of us? None among us is perfect, so

perfection can’t be what God expects. What does God expect of us?

II. God expects us to obey:

A. We need God. Our sins have put is in jeopardy of losing our souls. Rom. 3:23;

6:23. If we fail to neglect the salvation He offers, we cannot escape. Heb. 2:1-4.

B. But God loves us and wants us to obey. John 3:16; Rom. 5:8; 2 Pet. 3:9.

C. To not obey the gospel is to be separated from God. 2 Thes. 1:7-9.

D. “What shall we do?” Acts 2:37-38. Obey. Repentance/baptism, remission/sins.

E. Deny self, take up cross, follow Jesus. Matt. 16:24-26.

F. Put God first always. Rich young ruler. Matt. 19:16-22.

III. God expects us to grow:

A. Too often the mistake many make is to become a Christian and then sit back and

not do much else.

B. We are to desire meat, not milk. Heb. 5:12-14.

C. 2 Pet. 1:5-11. Without growth in these areas we will forget and drift. But to have

these things is to assure our salvation.

D. Can we honestly say that we have diligently grown in these areas?

1. Faith? Do we have a deeper connection with God? Do you know what

you believe and why? It is a shame for people to have no deeper faith

today than when they initially became Christians.

2. Virtue? Courage. Are you able/willing to courageously do the right

things with respect to righteous living, evangelism, correction of others in

sin?

3. Knowledge? Can you name 10 things that you have learned recently?

4. Self-control, perseverance/patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, love?

E. If we do not grow we will not live.

IV. God expects us to work:

A. We don’t earn our salvation. We are saved by grace. Eph. 2:8-9. However, we

can not be what God expects if we do not find our place in the body of Christ and

do the work that needs to be done.

B. Synergy. Not the 80/20 rule. The most success will come when all are working

together toward the same goal, supporting one another with love and

encouragement.

C. Many parts/members, but one body. 1 Cor. 12. All work together. Eph. 4:15-16.

D. Parable of the talents. Matt. 25:14-30. “Each according to his own ability.”

E. To be judged according to our works. Rev. 20:12.

V. Conclusion:

A. We are created in the image of God. God has sent His Son to die for our sins. He

is patiently waiting for us to repent. What does God expect of us? He expects us

to see the value in obedience and to be saved for eternity! Obey God!
