Good question Liz.  You mentioned the rules of geological events and this is a good place to start a discussion.  You see, the "rules" you speak of are only guesses and they have no basis is fact whatsoever.  Scientist can not agree on how to properly establish these rules so to be safe most grossly over estimate time lines.  Since there is no base line fact from which to establish how long geological events take to occur we must consider the possibility that they can happen quickly in certain circumstances.

The Grand Canyon is a perfect example of the kind of geological event that could have been created by the flood mentioned in Genesis.  This is very reasonable to believe.
