JESUS: THE HIGH PRIEST (January 13, 2019)

                                     JESUS: THE HIGH PRIEST

"For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things
pertaining to Godthat he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can have
compassion on those who are ignorant and going sins. And no man takes this
honor to himself, but he
who is called by God, just as Aaron was."
(Hebrews 5:1-4 NKJV)

This passage summarizes the office of the High Priest. What were the priestly
requirements?  First, the High Priest needed to be a human, since he was subject
to the same weaknesses. He would understand other humans; thus, have compassion
on them. Second, he was appointed (chosen by God like Aaron). The Greek word
from which priest is translated means "sacred" or "holy." This meant he was
set apart" by God for divine service. Third, he was chosen for humans, i.e., for the
benefit of humans, as far as their relationship with God was concerned.  How did he
help in this regard? Fourth, the High Priest gave gifts and sacrifices for people's sins.

What about Christ?  First, Christ was a human on earth, which means He understands
us
(Hebrews 4:15).  Second, Christ was chosen by God to be High Priest (5:10).  Third,
His work
was for our benefit, as far as our relationship with God is concerned.
As priest, what has He done
for us?  Fourth, He came to God with gifts and the
sacrifice.  He offered up prayers
on our behalf. But He also gave His own life as the
sacrifice. The Old Testament helps
us understand the role of Jesus. Furthermore,
Jesus fulfills the role of High Priest in the greater sense.  He was
the greater sense.
He was
a human who was tempted, yet without sin.  Jesus did not have to sacrifice for
Himself.  But He
did it for our sins.  Jesus is The Greatest High Priest who offered the
greatest sacrifice.  Are you following the Great High Priest?
