Instrumental Music
In The New Testament

Tonight, we are going to focus on the occurrences of instrumental music in the New Testament, from Matthew through Jude, investigate the manner of music to be used in New Testament worship.

The following five texts represent the occurrences of instrumental music in the New Testament.

• "When Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, He said to them, ‘Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.' And they ridiculed Him." (Mt 9:23-24)
• "But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their companions, and saying: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we mourned to you, and you did not lament.'" (Mt 11:16-17)
• "And the Lord said, “To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we mourned to you, and you did not weep.'" (Luke 7:32)
• "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal." (1  Corinthians 13:1-2)
