Questions God Asked of Adam and Eve

It is interesting to consider God's interaction with folks in the Old Testament, and specifically instances where we see Him speaking directly to someone. Of particular are the questions asked of Adam and Eve. Is God trying to obtain knowledge? What is the purpose of His questions?

WHERE ARE YOU? (Genesis 3:9)  And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?”
It is not that God did not know where Adam was. He is all-knowing, He is all-seeing. There is no place that a man might go to escape the presence of God (Psalm 139:7-12).
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.”  Rather, God sought for Adam's explanation of why he had fled His presence. Adam had hid himself, why? Again, not that the Lord did not know, but He asked that Adam might have an opportunity to tell the truth.  (confess his sin).

WHO TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE NAKED? HAVE YOU EATEN FROM THE TREE...? (Genesis 3:11) And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?”
As Adam spoke to the Lord, he confessed that he was hiding because he was naked. Now realize, this was no different than how God had made him, "And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed." Genesis 2:25 The difference now is that Adam was ashamed and afraid. He had gained a measure of knowledge, which God had not given to him. He now knew fear and shame. What would cause one to know fear and shame? He had disobeyed the voice of the Lord, and had eaten from the tree of which God had commanded that they not eat.

WHAT IS THIS YOU HAVE DONE? (Genesis 3:13)
And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.”
Now, God is speaking with Eve. As He sought an explanation with Adam (not for His benefit, but for Adam's), so He seeks Eve to explain herself. How is it that she had violated such a straightforward command? Like her husband, she sought to shift the blame elsewhere. It was the serpent; he had deceived her.

How important to not only know the will of God, but also to believe it entirely. God had directly forbidden them to eat of the tree in the midst of the garden. He had told them that if they did eat of that tree, they would surely die. But rather than heed these words of the Creator, she chose to listen to the voice of the serpent and thus sinned.
