Pleasing God

Pleasing God

Text:

Proverbs 3:5-10: 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. 8It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. 9Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; 10then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.

Five Principals in order to live a life pleasing to God:

  1. Trust      in the Lord.
    1.
    2. History       would have been much different in Adam and Eve would have trusted God.

                                                              i.      Trusting God means doing what He asks of us.

    1. God       does not lead us the wrong way! He has our best interest at heart.

                                                              i.      Godís laws are not rules for rules sake.

1.      God knows what will be best for us.

2.      He knows what will lead us astray, and what will help us.

ii.      The psalmist says: Psalm 18:2 - The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

iii.      We should trust and obey God.

1.      God can take impossible circumstances, and work them together for good if we just trust and obey.

a.       God can melt the hardest heart.

b.      He can open doors.

c.

  1. Lean not      on your own understanding.
    1.
    2. Man       is made in Godís image.

                                                              i.      At the outset Satan attacked Adam and Eve and appealed to their own desires, and prompted them to do what felt best to them.

    1. Jeremiah 10:23 -  I       know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in       man who walks to direct his steps.

                                                              i.      Our own understanding will lead us astray.

ii.      Division in the religious world shows us what man leaning on his own understanding leads to.

1.      Many say, "I thinkĒ or "in my opinionĒ when they would be better served to take a look at what God has said.

a.       Proverbs 14:12 - There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.

b.      Luke 6:46 - "Why( do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?

                                                                                                                                      i.      We must let Godís word be out guide.

  1. Acknowledge Him in all of your ways.
    1.
    2. God is our creator and we must       worship Him.
    3.
    4. Many do not acknowledge God.

                                                              i.      They canít see Him because they do not have the eye of faith.

1.      Atheism/Agnostics

    1. Mankind likes to take credit,       but whatever I am able to accomplish in life is because of Godís blessing       in my life.

                                                              i.      It is not about me.

ii.      John 3:39 - He must increase, but I must decrease

d. We will all acknowledge Him sooner or later.

      i. Acts 17:31 - because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.

  1. Be not wise in your own eyes.
    1.
    2. This is a warning against pride.

                                                              i.      Proverbs 16:18 - Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

    1. There a numerous examples in the       Bible of people paying the price for pride.

                                                              i.      Nebuchadnezzar Ė Daniel 4:29-32 - 29At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30and the king answered and said, "Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?" 31 While the words were still in the kingís mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, "O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you, 32 and you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. And you shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will."

ii.      It is impossible to please God with pride in your heart.

  1. Honor      the LORD with your wealth and with the      firstfruits of all your produce.
    1.
    2.  Matthew       6:19-20 - "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on       earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where       neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and       steal.
    3.
    4. What I have is not mine.       God lends us things to use for His glory.

                                                              i.      I may work, but it is God who gives me the ability to work.

ii.      We need to honor God by the way we use His blessings, and the way that we give back to Him.
