FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE

"For thou didst form my inward parts: Thou didst cover me in my mother's womb. I will give thanks unto thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Wonderful are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well" (Psalms 139:13-14, Emphasis mine, ELR). Abortion must be a hateful practice to our God since it is deliberate destruction of this marvelous creation. In recent years medical science and the sonogram has revealed just how fearfully and wonderfully made we are. Interestingly, Psalms 139 was written by King David about 3,000 years ago!

More recently medical science has learned that changes in the female egg start immediately after fertilization. More astounding is how quickly these changes are translated to the development of the individual. The things necessary to determine a blueprint of the individual with such details as the length of their nose to the diseases they will inherit are present at fertilization. Within six weeks the arms and legs begin to form. In eight weeks the brain of the infant will begin to form. By the seventh to eighth week the eyes are beginning to form, and by the seventeenth week hands, toes and fingers have developed to the extent that they even have nails growing on them. By the third to fourth month hands can grasp, and the legs can even kick gently.

By the fourth to fifth month, the baby in the womb is well formed and begins to move on its own. The mother can begin to feel movement during this time too. In fact, one writer mentioned that during this time, the baby begins to suck its own thumb, and generally act like a newborn baby. In the New Testament (Luke 1:41) the Bible says that John the Baptist leaped in his mother's womb at the salutation of Mary to Elizabeth. Since the Bible also says that a body separate from its spirit is dead (James 2:26) this surely is evidence that John the Baptist had a spirit and was alive in his mother's womb although it was about three months before he was born.

Abortion as practiced in our nation and the world today is nothing short of barbarous murder. A baby who can feel, is dismembered in the womb of the mother, and endures more pain than all the so-called "torture" that war criminals endured in Guantanamo in recent years. Who wouldn't be horrified when a person is literally cut to pieces without anesthetic or concern? God even legislated in the Old Testament severe penalties for those who caused miscarriages when injury followed: "When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman's husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe." (Exodus 21:22-25, ESV). How do you suppose God feels about America and abortion today?
