FORWARD - CAN WE KNOW TRUTH TODAY?

Sadly, In today’s world, there are many who feel we cannot know truth.  Others feel truth is relative.  Then there are those who affirm, "Truth is what I want it to be.”  A dictionary definition states that truth is that which is in accordance with facts or reality.

There is historical truth as well as scientific truth.  The scholar and the scientist both have the responsibility to seek and find that which is in harmony with the facts or reality.  When either one ignores the evidence and adheres to preconceptions, he (or she) has failed their calling or commitment to truth.

Can we then not apply these same principles in and to Christianity?  For the Bible to be true, would it not of necessity be scientifically true as well as historically true?  The Bible cannot be historically false and at the same time true in the field of religion.  The Christian must believe there is a God and that Jesus of Nazareth is, as he claimed, the Son of God.  If he accepts these two truths or facts as reality, and at the same time rejects the Bible as the revelation of God to man, he finds himself without a foundation of facts on which he must base his faith.

Jesus had a great deal to say about truth.  After his resurrection he pointed out to the apostle Thomas, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” John 14:6.  As someone long ago pointed out, "Without the way there is no going, without the truth, there is no knowing, and without the life there is no living.”  In the Lord’s discussion with Pilate (John 18:36-38) he stated, "Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”  Pilate’s cynical response, "What is truth?” is echoed in the twenty first century by those who contend "We cannot know truth.”

Christians today can rest in the promise Christ made to his disciples in the first century of the Christian era,
"If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32).
