Joe S. Warlick vs E. W. Alderson (Methodist)
September 10, 1903
Celeste, Texas

(By T. W. Phillips)

Debate at Celeste, Tx. on establishment of church, infant baptism, action of baptism.

Mr. Alderson is a scholarly man and an orator of great ability. He is the strongest defender Methodistism in the South. Joe S. Warlick is second to none when it comes to defending the truth. Everything passed off nicely (except Mr. Alderson got mad two or three times) during the entire 8 days debate. Quite a number of Methodist preachers, as well as gospel preachers, were in attendance. Mr. Stuckey, Alderson's moderator, several times expressed dissatisfaction at Alderson's failures.

The debaters rested one night, and the two moderators, Stuckey and myself (Phillips), debated the covenant question that night, after which the postmaster at Celeste (who is a Methodist) gave me one dollar, saying it was for giving Stuckey such a good "thrashing." It was a grand victory for the cause of Christ in Celeste. The Methodist showed their defeat to plainly to be denied.
