H. E. Winkler vs Mr. Taylor (Missionary Baptist)
September 2, 1918
Needmore, Tennessee

(By T. B. Thompson)

Sept. 3-6, at Needmore near Cumberland City, Tenn. H. E. Winkler affirmed on Baptism and apostasy.

Bro. Winkler is only 29 years old, while Mr. Taylor was twice his age and is regarded as one of the most skilled debaters in the Missionary Baptist Church. Putting a man of Taylor's age and experience up against Winkler, is a confession upon the part of the Baptists that they thought such a man was needed to rally their cause in such a contest.

Bro. Winkler has a most pleasing address, commanding both the respect and attention of his audience. His scripture quotations were accurate and pointed, and he impressed his audience with familiarity with the N. T. One amusing feature of the discussion was the ability of young Winkler to keep his experienced opponent very bust at times.

The deportment of the debaters was all any community could ask, and also fine deportment by the audience. Prejudice was eliminated toward debaters. Mr. Taylor never once referred to bro. Winkler as a "Campbellite." The more informed debaters among denominations are leaving off such reflections. Three were baptized.
