Divorce and Remarriage: Five Widely-held False Views

Jon Gary Williams

1) "Fornication" on the part of a spouse is not the only reason allowing one to divorce and marry another person.

2) What Jesus taught in Matthew 19:9 does not apply to anyone this side of the cross.

3) What Jesus taught in Matthew 19:9 does not apply to non-Christians.

4) The "adultery" Jesus mentioned in Matthew 19:9 does not involve the sexual act. That is, "adultery" is merely getting an unscriptural divorce and going through a wedding ceremony to another person.

5) What Paul taught in I Corinthians 7:15 means a Christian who has been deserted by an otherwise faithful non-Christian spouse is free to marry again.

To discover someone's position on these views, here are five questions that must be answered with a simple "yes" or "no." There is no wiggle room.

1) Is "fornication" on the part of a spouse the only reason allowing one to divorce and marry another person? Yes or No

2) Does what Jesus taught in Matthew 19:9 apply to people this side of the cross? Yes or No

3)
Does what Jesus taught in
Matthew 19:9 apply to non-Christians as well as Christians? Yes or No

4) In Matthew19:9 when Jesus said people commit "adultery" was he speaking of the sexual act?  Yes or No

5) In I Corinthians 7:15 was Paul teaching that a Christian who has been deserted by a non-Christian spouse is free to marry again? Yes or No

Anyone answering "no" to #1, 2, 3 or 4 does not teach the truth.
Anyone answering "yes" to #5 does not teach the truth.
