A. B. Barrett vs A. H. Autry (Baptist)
August 28, 1913
Bunger, Texas

(By E. Christian)

July 31 and going for six days at Bunger, Texas debated general church question.

Mr. Autry was an experienced debater. Autry would not tell when the Baptist church began. He was very unfair in the debate and used the term "Campbellite" over one hundred times. But Bro. Barrett was equal to the occasion. "I have heard it said that Bro. Barrett was a coming debater, but I must say that he is already here." I consider him one of the best in the brotherhood. He conducts himself in a gentlemanly way, stays with his proposition, and attends to his opponent with scriptural arguments.. The brethren were well pleased with his defense and exposure of Baptist
doctrine. One of Autry's positions was that we are saved at the point of faith, and that faith is not the work of God; but when exposed by Bro. Barrett who quoted the language of the Savior, "This is the work of God, that you believe on him" Autry replied that the Savior was making a play on words. Then Bro. Barrett proceeded to show him up as an infidel on this and many other positions equally as bad. Two of our brethren came from Throckmorton, Texas and heard only one speech by Bro. Barrett and were so impressed that they asked him to meet Joe Neuman in debate at Throckmorton beginning August 18.

A very large crowd attended. Preachers there: Bro. Pursley and Bro. Narred of Graham, Texas.

Brethren when you need the Baptists attended to, call from Bro. A. B. Barrett of Cleburne, Texas. He will do the work. E. Christian moderated for Bro. Barrett; a Mr. Piller moderated for Autry.
