Charles M. Campbell vs Charles C. Murray (Pentecostal)
September 13, 1951

(By Edward White, Canton, Ohio)

Mr. Murray affirmed: "Resolved, that the scriptures teach the baptism with the Holy Spirit - with the evidence of speaking in other tongues - was the sign of New Testament birth, and still stands today." Mr. Murray proved himself no debater on the first night. Bro. Campbell handed him a list of 20 questions on the proposition, and not one word of reply was offered. His main argument was based upon Isaiah 28:9-12 and especially the statement, "For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to his people." Murray let the statement slip that he was not able to speak in tongues for six months after his conversion because of a failure to cleanse himself of all sin. He gave no demonstration of speaking in tongues.

Bro. Campbell affirmed: "The scriptures teach that the Godhead is composed of three distinct persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit." Bro. Campbell read 35 scriptures in succession which showed three distinct persons in the Godhead. Murray made no attempt to reply to the passages. He built up a straw man by charging that Bro. Campbell was trying to prove that there are three Gods.

Bro. Campbell asked such questions as follows: "Does God have a Son?" "Does God have a Holy Spirit?" "Was the Holy Spirit in the grave for three days and nights?" "Was there a God on the throne of the universe when Jesus was in the grave?" "Did Jesus know when he was coming back again when he made the statement recorded in Mark 13:22?" "Did God know?" "Who sent Jesus into the world?" "To whom was Jesus praying on the cross?" Again no reply was attempted by Mr. Murray. Everything was orderly for the most part.
