T. W. Mathews vs W. J. Beale (Missionary Baptist)
July 27, 1905
Kirksey, Kentucky

(By Unknown)

At Kirksey, Ky. July 4-7.

Beale tried to prove that God's plan of salvation has ever been the same - repentance and faith; and as no baptism was required for salvation in the old dispensation, then baptism now is not necessary to salvation.

Bro. Mathews showed the inconsistency of such a position, and admitted that we are saved by faith and repentance, but not by either or both of them alone. Bro. Mathews also proved by the Bible that the penitent believer has no promise of salvation from past sins til after baptism. Bro. Mathews made a masterful speech on the establishment of the church. Mr. Beale did not answer one argument. People from other churches said bro. Mathews was much more able then Mr. Beale.
