W. H. Owen vs O. A. Utley (Baptist)
December 22, 1904
Standing Rock, Tennessee

(By J. R. Sisco)

Nov. 10-13 - at Standing Rock in Perry County, Tenn.

Bro. Owen has preached for two years and is a young man, but he made an able defense of God's truth, All of his scriptures on baptism gave Mr. Utley much trouble. Bro. Owen pressed Utley on "from what does baptism save us?"

The 2nd day Utley tried to set up the church during the personal ministry of Jesus. He showed weakness on this. Bro. Owen showed that "at hand" (Mk.1:15) mean t "right here at present." This destroyed Utley's proposition. Owen said he could take Mr. Utley's scriptures and his logic and set up the church even before Christ or John the Baptist lived on earth.

Mr. Utley is a smart man and tries to cover up the truth. He tried to do this the first day by wit and sophistry, but Owen pressed him until people saw his awkward position. Bro. Owen turned wit and sarcasm against Utley which worried him much. One said bro. Owen preached just what the Bible teaches and the people called "Campbellites" has been misrepresented to him.
