H. M. Phillips vs J. R. Scott (Primitive Baptist)
March 3, 1934
Location Unknown

(By Harvey Riggs)

Feb.27 - Mar. 2

It is the opinion of all that bro. Phillips did some of his finest and most constructive work ever known here. Sessions were help in the court house, and it was packed despite bad weather.

Mr. Scott aff: That God gives eternal live unconditionally to the alien sinner. His arguments were all practically the same - that the sinner is "dead" in the sense of being irresponsible and incapable of any moral act, like believing or obeying God, so that God must act unconditionally and independently of the sinner's will. No attention was paid by him to the covenants and divisions of the scriptures.

Bro. Phillips answered all questions, replied to every argument, and showed the true connection of the scriptures introduced. Nonmembers have spoken to me in appreciation of his work, saying they were glad to hear our position made clear - that we do not teach "water salvation." About 30 gospel preachers were present.
