W. Curtis Porter vs Ervin Waters (One Cupper)
August 8, 1946
Lawrenceburg, Tennessee

(By Franklin Puckett)

The debate was July 16-19 near Lawrenceburg, Tenn.

Bro. Porter affirmed the following things are scriptural : 1) Individual communion cups. 2) divided Bible classes. Bro. Waters affirmed the following to be scriptural: 1) using only fermented grape juice. 2) having no divided Bible classes.

Both men acted like Christian gentleman. Large audiences but no demonstrations, disturbances or interruptions. Though the battle was hard fought, a spirit of friendliness prevailed. Bro. Waters is considered a champion by the one-cup, anti-class element. Bro. Porter handled very well all the usual arguments used by the one-cup, no-class brethren. Nothing new was offered by bro. Waters. Most could see the obvious error of his position.
