F. B. Srygley As A Debater

I once heard F. B. Srygley debate the church question (when the church was established) and the position he took was invulnerable, for the reason that he made no effort to defend "us as a people," but confined his efforts to the church spoken of in the New Testament, showing clearly its origin, doctrine, faith and practice, acknowledging no authority but the word of God on the subject, and claiming identity with nothing larger or smaller that the church spoken of in the Bible. It is doubtless for this reason that the Baptist have such an aversion to debating with him. When in the affirmative he hides himself behind the Bible giving no concern to "what we teach;" and when in the negative he in a masterly way turns the search light of truth on the false position of his opponent with telling effect. I predict that not many more will ever engage in debate with him. This shows the wisdom and righteousness of leaving one's self and party out of the discussion.
