What We Believe

By Travis Bookout

  1. The Morton Street church of Christ believes in the all sufficiency of the Scriptures.  The Bible is the verbally inspired Word of Jehovah, and it is our sole source of knowing God, Christ, proper doctrine, and godly living.  It was written by men who were moved by the Holy Spirit, and is therefore, as perfect as the God who inspired it (2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 2 Peter 1:20, 21).
  2. The Morton Street church of Christ believes that the Bible is truth.  The Creation account given in Genesis1 and 2, the Flood account given in Genesis 6, and all miracles recorded throughout are factual accounts of history and illustrate the power of God.
  3. The Morton Street church of Christ believes that there is one God who is made up of three distinct Beings.  The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are the God.  This God is the Creator of the Universe, the author of the Bible, and our only source of hope and salvation.
  4. The Morton Street church of Christ believes that Jesus is the Christ and is the Son of God.  He is eternal and all powerful, He was active in the creation of all that there is, He is active in the Old Testament, and He took on human form in the body of Jesus of Nazareth.  Jesus was born of a virgin, He fulfilled Old Testament Scripture, He lived a sinless life, He died on a Roman cross for the sins of the whole world, He was buried in a tomb, He rose from the dead three days later, he appeared to many people (both believers and unbelievers), He is the founder of the church, all who are saved are added to the church, Jesus will return to be met in the air by all of His followers, and we will forever live with our Lord in the glories of Heaven.
  5. The Morton Street church of Christ believes in the importance of the Old Testament, without binding the Laws of it on Christians today.  The Old Covenant was fulfilled by Christ (Matthew 5:17, 18), abolished in His flesh (Ephesians 2:15), and is not bound on Christians today (Colossians 2:16).  Therefore, we do not practice Old Testament teachings on animal sacrifices, tithing, burning incense, priestly robes, the Levitical priesthood, musical instruments, Jerusalem worship, Temple worship, capitol punishment, etc.  These things were “a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ” (Colossians 2:17).  However, the Old Testament is still extremely important for us to learn from (Romans 15:4), see examples of how God deals with His people (1 Corinthians 10:6, 11; Hebrews 4:11), see and develop faith in Christ (2 Timothy 3:15), and to be brought to Christ (Galatians 3:24, 25).
  6. The Morton Street church of Christ believes that salvation is found only in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 2:10, John 14:6).  One must have faith in Jesus and know that He is the Son of God (John 8:24).  One must make a change in his life to      try to quit committing sin, and live a life faithful to Jesus (Acts 26:20).  One must be willing to respond to his faith by confessing it before men now and for the rest of his life (1 Timothy 6:12; Romans 10:9).  One must act upon their faith by being immersed into Christ (Romans 6:3, 4; Galatians 3:26, 27), for the forgiveness of their sins (Acts 2:38), and have their sins washed away, calling on the name of the Lord through baptism (Acts 22:16).  It is in this act that one enters the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13), becomes a new man (Romans 6:3-6), is made alive from the dead (Colossians 2:11-15), and is saved (1 Peter 3:21).  And finally, one must be faithful until death (Revelation 2:10), walk in the light (1 John 1:7), and never turn from Jesus (Hebrews 6:4-6).
  7. The Morton Street church of Christ believes that there is only one church, which is the body (Ephesians 1:22, 4:4), and that salvation is found only in the body (Ephesians 5:23).
  8. The Morton Street church of Christ believes that denominationalism is sin (1 Corinthians 1:10-13).
  9. The Morton Street church of Christ believes that vocal singing from the heart is what is permitted in the New Testament.  Any singing that is not from the heart is not what God wants and is not an act of obedience to God.  Any music that is mechanical and not vocal or from the heart is also not what God wants and is an act of disobedience.  The only place for musical instruments in worship to God is for Levites in Jerusalem during animal sacrifices.  We are no longer under the Old Law, we no longer worship in Jerusalem,  we no longer have Levitical singers, musicians, or priests, we no longer worship with animal sacrifices, and so musical instruments should not be found in worship.
  10. The Morton Street church of Christ believes in the purity of life-time commitments in marriage.  We strive to help keep marriages together and help strengthen the family as much as possible.  The only Biblical justification for divorce and remarriage is for the innocent party who was the victim of an unfaithful spouse.  God is forgiving to all, for any sin, however, repentance is always required.
  11. The Morton Street church of Christ believes that change can be good as long as it is biblical and beneficial.  Any change from the word of God, is man made and not God made.  We should follow the teachings of God rather than men.
  12. The Morton Street church of Christ believes in the power of the blood of Jesus.  There is no sin that cannot be forgiven, nor is their any sinner who cannot be saved.  The requirements for salvation are clearly given in the New Testament, and anyone who wants to be saved can be.
