THE TRUSTWORTHINESS OF SCRIPTUE

The Trustworthiness of Scripture

Many today deny that Scripture is of God and, thus, reliable.  Christ is not among them!  He pointed people to Scripture and asked, "Have ye not read?" (Matthew 19:4) and declared, "Scripture cannot be broken" (John 10:35).  And the apostle Paul is not among them!  To prove his doctrine he said, "And so it is written" (1 Corinthians 15:45).  Neither is the apostle Peter among them!  He cited Scripture references to Noah and the flood, Sodom and Gomorrha, and Lot as evidence of God's judgment upon those who sin (2 Peter 2:5-7).  And the apostle John is not among them!  He preached "these are written" as the basis for faith and eternal life (John 20:30-31).  Indeed, as Paul wrote, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable" (2 Timothy 3:16-17).  It is sobering to consider who you are standing against when you deny the trustworthiness of Scripture.  Shouldn't it give one pause to side against the likes of Paul, Peter, John, and the Christ?!

How can anyone deny the trustworthiness of Scripture when (1) not one contradiction has ever been proved, (2) not one scientific error has ever been demonstrated, (3) in its pages never has an historical mistake been found, (4) not one flaw regarding matters of geography is observed, (5) every single prophetic prediction intended for previous fulfillment has come to pass exactly as prophesied?  Men (rocket scientists, newspaper editors, weathermen, bankers, etc.) make mistakes.  But not God, the author of Scripture.  He and his word are worthy of complete trust.

Because Scripture is from God and, thus, completely reliable and true, you and I can know that (1) every matter taught in the Bible is true including creation, the flood, parting of the Red Sea, Jesus' virgin birth, walk on the water, and resurrection from the dead, (2) every threat of the Bible, e.g., "those who know not God and obey not the gospel shall be punished with everlasting destruction" (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9), shall be carried out, (3) every promise of the Bible, e.g., "I will come again and receive you unto myself" (John 14:3), will be fulfilled, and (4) every command of the Bible must be obeyed (Matthew 7:21; 1 John 2:3).

Life is short and unsure.  Scripture is enduring and certain--a  sure foundation.  The words of the prophet Isaiah were echoed by the apostle Peter when he wrote, "For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.  The grass withers, and the flower thereof falls away: But the word of the Lord endures forever" (1 Peter 1:24-25).

Each one is encouraged to read and study the Bible for himself and follow the teachings found therein, wherever they might lead.  Trusting and obeying Scripture will result in all your sins being forgiven, becoming a Christian (one belonging to Christ), and being a member of the church (saved people, family, body) of Christ (Acts 2:37-47; Acts 11:26; Acts 22:16; Acts 26:27-29; 1 Peter 4:16; Matthew 16:18; Romans 16:16; Ephesians 1:22-23; 1 Timothy 3:15; Ephesians 5:23).
