WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?
Studying about the Holy Spirit is much like studying about the Father and the Son. We can continually learn about each one for
the rest of our lives. But for each we can start with the fundamentals and grow
from there. Knowing
first who the Holy Spirit is should motivate us to learn about Him and be obedient to God's will.
THE
HOLY SPIRIT IS A BEING. The Holy Spirit is not a holy mist in the air or force emanating from the Father. The Spirit is a person; but, not in the sense of
having a physical body. Rather, He has
His own intellect, personality, feelings, emotions, and willpower. The Bible says He teaches (John 14:26), He testifies
(John 15:26), He guides (John 16:13), He speaks (1 Timothy 4:1), He intercedes
(Romans 8:27), He
knows (1 Corinthians 2:11), and He loves (Romans 15:30). Since He is a real being,
then He can be insulted (Hebrews 10:29), be lied
to (Acts 5:3), and be grieved (Ephesians 4:30). He also possesses
willpower (1 Corinthians 12:11).
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS DIVINE. His role is separate from the Father and the Son. But His nature is equal with them. He is eternal (Hebrews 9:14), omniscient (1 Corinthians 2:11), omnipresent (Psalm
139:7), omnipotent (Genesis 1:2), and holy (John 14:26). Since He possesses the
divine attributes, then He is a Godhead member (Romans 1:20). That's why we are called
to be baptized in the name of all three (Matthew 28:19). We do not have
three gods because the Bible
says there is one God (James 2:19). But there are three beings who possess the same
divine nature. Also, each being of the Godhead plays a different role in the redemption
scheme.
Ephesians 4:30 says, "And
do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption." How can we commit sinful
actions knowing that it would grieve the Spirit,
who is Deity?
Are you grieving the Holy Spirit?
