Open Our Eyes, Lord

Open Our Eyes, LORD

1. Dothan surrounded by Syrians to capture Elisha: 2Kgs6.8-23 (17&20)

  • Yahweh gave the prophet insight into enemy's      plans (v12).
  • He sent heavenly host to protect his servant (v17).
  • He struck the enemy blind and turned their hearts      (v23).

2. The prophet given challenge of preaching to stubborn Israel: Isa6.1-10

  • Isaiah had a vision of God, seated in glory,      praised by seraphim.
  • He saw the King, Yahweh of hosts & his guilt      removed (vs5-7).
  • He was sent to a stubborn people, who would not      'get it' (vs9,10).

3. Jesus heals a man born blind: Jn9

  • His sin was not punishment for guilt, but an occasion      for God's glory (vs2-5).
  • The Jewish leaders refused to accept this &      cast him out (vs18,24, 34).
  • Different ways to see... or be blind (vs35-41) /      Note: the morally responsible who reject truth stand condemned (Mt23.31 / Jn15.22,24).

The Usefulness of Sight

  • The way we look at the world effects our entire      life (Mt6.22,23 / Lk11.34).
  • Seeing is light and life. The alternative is      blindness -- darkness -- death.
  • We can work freely, avoid pitfalls, glorify God      in the daylight (Jn9.4).

Spiritual Blindness

  • The blind men who sought Jesus, could already see      (Mt9.27,28 / 20.30)!
  • Jesus called the leading Jews 'Blind' 5X      (Mt23.16,17,17,24,26).
  • Spiritually, we may have 'selective blindness' --      vision altered by prejudice (Jn12.37-43).

Proclaiming Good News

  • Only the Lord can restore sight! "The LORD opens      the eyes of the blind." (Psa146.8)
  • Spirit-anointed to proclaim sight to the blind - Isa61:1,2      > Lk4.18 (Lk7.22).
  • Evangelists appointed to turn us from darkness to      light (Acts26.18).

What to Open our Eyes TO ("Lift Up Your Eyes!")

1. Our Need for the word of God

"Lord, open the King of England's eyes." -- Tyndale, his execution, 1536

Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. (Psa119:18)

2. The Identity of the Messiah

As Simeon did: "Lord ... my eyes have seen your salvation (Lk2.29-30 ESV).

Sometimes eyes were 'kept' from recognizing Him (Lk24.16), until He opens them (v31).

3. Our Need for Jesus & His power -- in the church

"...not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked" (Rev3.17).

Divine power >unto> godly life. IF we grow & do not forget deliverance (2Pet1.9).

4. The Ultimate Protection God provides for His people

"The angel of Yahweh encamps around those who fear Him" (Psa34.7).

So we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear" (Heb 13:6).

5. The Judgment of God hovers over the wicked

"David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD..." (1Chron21.16).

6. The Fields White unto Harvest -- lives to reap for Jesus

"Look... lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest." (Jn4.35).

7. The Greatness of our Deliverance in the Lord Jesus

"The eyes of your hearts enlightened...his glorious inheritance in the saints" (Eph1.18).

The Lord's Doing -- is marvelous in our eyes (Mk12.11)!
