Life After Death

What does Scripture Say about - Life After Death?

A Fact of Life

  • We are formed from the soil      and shall return there (Gen3.19).
  • Like every previous      generation, we "Go to our fathers" (Gen15.15).
  • Land of the Living? or of      the Dying (Job 30:23).
  • Wealth and financial      security do not give relief from death: Read Psa49.10,11,12

Words of Death

  • Sheol: the world of the dead      / 63x in Hebrew / trans: "grave" "pit" "hell."
  • The destiny of all living      (Psa89.48) - causes the wise to look up (Prov15.24).
  • Greek parallel: Hades = the      grave, state of the dead / 11x in NT (Ax2,27,31).

OT Picture Faint

  • Honest observations: "better      the house of mourning" (Eccl3:21      / 7.2 / 9.10 / 12.5).
  • Glimmer of hope: "God will      ransom my life" (Psa49.15 /      Psa115.17,18 / Prov12.28).
  • Hints of life hereafter: "those      who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake" (Dan12.2,3).

Jesus Brings Life

  • As God Almighty, the Son has      Life in Himself (Jn5.26&27).
  • The Lord raised 3: daughter      of Jairus (Mk5), son of Nain widow (Lk7) & Lazarus (Jn11).
  • "I am the resurrection and      the life" (Jn11.25). Believe in      Him and Live (v26)!

He Died & AROSE

  • The Gospel:      Messiah died, was buried, and was raised! (1Cor15.1-4)
  • He conquers      death -- and our fear of it (Heb2.14,15 / Rev1.17,18).
  • Secures      our eternal redemption, beyond all obstacles and all doubt (Rom8.38,39).

How Inherit Glory?

  • Sown a natural      body, raised a spiritual (1Cor15.42-44).
  • He will remove      us from the realm of the perishable (1Cor15.50-54 / Isa25.8).
  • We shall be like Him      (1Jn3.2) - transformed into glorious form (Phil3.20,21).

What Comes Next?

  • Two Things Certain: Death      & Judgment (Heb 9:27 / Rev      20.13).
  • Absent from the body --      Present with the Lord (2Cor5.8). With Christ -- far better (Phil1.23).
  • "Today you will be with me      in Paradise" (Luke 23:43). We Go to the      Land of the Living!

The Christian's Perspective

  • Death is NOT the focus -- but      new Life, in Jesus (Phil3.8-11).
  • We live in courage, fruitful      labor & progress in faith (Phil1.20-25).
  • We have the 'ages to come'      to look forward to (Eph2.4-7)!

"O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1Cor.15.55-57).

[from Hosea13.14 -- the threat of judgment reversed in Christ].
