Mark 12b Notes

Mark12b (vs13-27)                          Notes

13   And they sent to Him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to trap   Him in His talk.

The   Jewish leadership (11.27) conspire to catch this teacher at His specialty --   there being no evidence in His regular teaching. Politics makes strange   bedfellows - these opposite regarding the independence of the Jewish state.

14   And they came and said to Him, "Teacher, we know that you are true and do not   care about anyone's opinion.

Interrupting   His business in the temple. Address in ostensible respect, yet confessing   their hypocrisy by insincere flattery.

For   you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God.

A   true statement. But, if convicted of this, they would know their trap would   fail. And they were insolent enemies of the truth.

Is   it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we   not?"

The   lead-in a let-down. "Is it right (what is your opinion)?" The census / poll /   'head-money' tax. Principle with practical application -- to resist the   secular state or to comply.

15   But, knowing their hypocrisy, He said to them, "Why put me to the test?

Their   motive made them suspect. Their insincerity did not deserve an answer.

Bring   me a denarius and let me look at it."

You   provide the tax-money and you will have your answer. Jesus points to the   solution.

16   And they brought one. And He said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is   this?"

Producing   the currency proves participation in the state system. They were subject to   the ruler who issued their money.

They   said to Him, "Caesar's."

They   thus acknowledge the head of state and their current ruler.

17   Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's,

Then   return / restore to the Czar his own money. He issues it and merely asks for   it back.

and   to God the things that are God's."

Higher   obligation to restore to God those things He has imparted: your heart and   very life.

And   they marveled at Him.

His   answer is true, wise, practical -- and catches them in their own net (Psa9.15).

18   And Sadducees came to Him, who say that there is no resurrection. And they   asked Him a question, saying,

Another   leading sect steps up to challenge the Lord. They confess the Law of Moses   yet are materialistic -- excluding the spiritual realm.

19   "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife,   but leaves no child, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for   his brother.

Again,   the respectful greeting -- tho insincere. Question hinged apparently in law   (Dt25.5). Provision for family name and inheritance to be preserved -- a need   of this world.

20   There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no   offspring.

A   possible, howbeit unlikely case to develop -- as depicted. Developed for a   purpose.

21   And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third   likewise.

22   And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died.

Note:   death is common to each player on this stage. Is this the end of all living?   (Eccl7.2)

23   In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the   seven had her as wife?"

Must   be stated by unbelievers with a sneer or sarcastic tone. How could one man   claim who was lawful wife of seven?

24   Jesus said to them, "Is this not the reason you are wrong,

Stating   their condition as challenge for them to disprove: "By what evidence can you   vindicate your error?"

because   you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God?

Cause   of False Teaching: Ignorance of Scripture & Divine Authority. Prophets:   Isa26.19 / Dan12.2. Creator can restore life.

25   For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in   marriage,

Yes,   the dead will rise! And earthly conventions will not be necessary. Marriage   > children > preserve life.

but   are like angels in heaven.

Yes,   there are angels! Risen humans partake of like spiritual nature -- immortal.   (Rom8.21,23)

26   And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses,

Quoting   Moses, their acknowledged teacher. How did you miss what He wrote? Blindness?

in   the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, "I AM the God of   Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

Referenced   by context: 'the bush passage.' God identified Himself: "Your fathers' God."   Plainly, the I AM continues the same always.

27   He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong."

The   Living God of living men. The patriarchs alive & well with Him. We err   when we miss the basics of Divine and human nature.
