Mark 16b Notes

Mark16b (vs14-20)                          Notes

14   Afterward He appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at   table,

Prior   to the Galilee meeting. That day in Jerusalem & next   week (Lk24.36 / Jn20.19f)

and   He rebuked them for their unbelief and harness of heart,

Expected   more than they produced. Soft hearts respond better to evidence of truth >   faith.

because   they had not believed those who saw Him after He had risen.

Eye   Witness testimony is powerful proof. So would their witness win the world to   faith.

15   And He said to them, "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the   whole creation.

Lofty   commission for unbelieving men! Mission work   in not an elective, but a mandatory major in the Lord's school.

16   Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved,

Both   faith and immersion essential to salvation. Our deliverance from sin comes in   God's way.

but   whoever does not believe will be condemned.

without   faith nothing follows, not one single aspect of obedience stands on   disbelief.

17   And these signs will accompany those who believe:

The   following description of various experiences of early disciples:

in   my name they will cast out demons;

as   frequent during Jesus' work (Mk1.23f / 3.15&23 / 5.15&18 / 6.13 /   7.26 / 16.9) Also Paul: Ax16.16-18 [7sons failed: Ax19.13-16]

they   will speak in new tongues;

languages   new to the speakers: Ax2.6-8 / 1Cor14

18   they will pick up serpents with their hands;

exposed   to hazards in travel -- NOT deliberately: Ax28.3-6

and   if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them;

as   above -- not intentional (see Lk4.9-12)

they   will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

Called   upon to aid the ailing and demonstrate grace and power. Jas5.14&15

19   So then the Lord Jesus, after He has spoken to them,

Luke   tells us for 40 days manifold evidence was provided (Ax1.3)

was   taken up into heaven

Here   told so briefly. See Ax1.9-11. He moves on to the Next Step in the plan.

and   sat down at the right hand of God.

Ascending   the throne of authority with the Father (Heb1.3b)

20   And they went out and preached everywhere,

Sum   of evangelistic efforts over the next 30+ years. See Acts.

while   the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.

Ascended   but not absent. Still with them, working. Bearing witness: Heb2.1-4
