God's Plan for Growth

God's Plan for Building the church - Eph 4:7-16

 Measure of Christ's Gift -- v7

  • Each      one of us. None without portion.
  • Grace Gift:      freely bestowed from divine store.
  • As      Christ sees fit to provide. He knows our needs.

The story of Christ - v8-10

  • Story      of conflict and Triumph from Psa 68:18.
  • Even      death itself destroyed by Him!
  • In      renewed peace He can distribute blessings.

 He Gave Some --v11

  • Roles      in the church Divinely appointed (God, Jesus, Spirit) -- 1 Cor 12:28.
  • Gifts:      ambassador, mouthpiece, proclaimer, shepherd, instructor.
  • All      abilities can be in one man. Most often each has primarily one.

 The Seed of the Kingdom

  • Which      came 1st -- the church or the word?
  • The      Word is the expression of the Divine Mind, giving birth to the church.
  • Gospel      continually ministered (served) to us. (Rom 15:4 / Col 1:28)

The Work of Ministry - v12a

  • Equipped      by God for different work (see Acts 6:2-4).
  • Some      Ministries: preaching, serving, giving, leading, mercy (Rom 12:3-8).
  • Like      our physical members - healthiest when active, working.

Building up the Body -- v12b

  • 'To      confirm the edifice.' God's temple established by each stone in its place.
  • Edification      NOT a work, but the result of doing the work.
  • Cannot      talk or coax a child into being strong. Must nourish and nurture.

 Fullness of Christ -- v13

  • All      members of the body, joined together in state of maturity.
  • The      Faith: acquaintance with the Messiah, Son of God, as He truly is.
  • Measure      of Maturity (our yardstick): Character of Christ.

 Leaving Childhood Behind -- v14

  • Not to      stay in immature state, forever babes (Heb 5:12-14).
  • Tossed      by waves, driven by winds of all kinds of teaching.
  • The      gullibility of children. But as we grow older - no longer innocent.

Speaking Truth in Love -- v15

  • Knowledge      of Verity. Intimate with Revelation. Study of Scripture.
  • Devotion      to God and Right and Others. We all NEED the truth.
  • Feeds      every manner of maturity -- all our facilities nurtured -- to Christ, the      head.

Each Part Doing Its Share -- v16

  • Body      needs every part, in good health, perfectly joined.
  • (A single      dysfunctional organ makes the entire body sick.)
  • Am I      healthy, growing, active - supporting the whole body?

God has set everything in place for the church to grow. Let's follow His plan!

But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. "Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men." "(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?" "He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)" "And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;" "For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:" "Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:" "That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;" "But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:" "From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love."
"Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them."
"For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope."
"Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:"
"Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables." "Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business." "But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word."
"For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith." "For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:" "So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another." "Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;" "Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;" "Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness."
"For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat." For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. "But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."

"And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues."
