Zion, City of God

Zion, the City of God

But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city. (Hebrews 11:16 ESV)

 Country or City Life?

  • Averse      to cities, I prefer to live in the country.
  • Dangers      come from either where (2Cor11:26).
  • Generally,      where many people, evil abounds.

City: πόλις / polis = one's native city, the inhabitants of a city

The City of Man, Babylon the Great

  • Yes,      a great city full of evil and corruption (Rev14:8).
  • Depicted      as a wildly adulterous & murderous woman (Rev17:3-6, 18).
  • Yah's      judgment will befall it (Rev16:19 / 18:1&2a, 4-8, 10, 16, 18-19, 21f).

The City of God, Heavenly Jerusalem

  • Beloved,      saints are fond of their closeness with God (Rev20:9).
  • New      Jerusalem, from above, is our mother (Gal4:26).
  • As      Abraham, we are looking for a place to live (Heb11:10,16 / 12:22 / 13:14).

John Sees the City -- Rev21

  • Product      / Gift of Heaven: "Coming down from God."
  • Massive      size: 1380 miles on a side, walls 216 feet thick!
  • Invaluable:      made of Precious metals, stones and      gems.

 Facilities of the City

  • Temple:      Almighty God and the Lamb.
  • Power      Supply: Divine glory continually / no night.
  • Water      Supply: River of life from the throne.
  • Food      Supply: Tree of life with monthly fruit and medicine.

 Meaning of the City:

  • The      bride, the Lamb's wife (21:2,9).
  • The      people of God, living with Him (v3).
  • Reward      for the faithful Over-comers (vs6,7).
  • Note      the gate & foundation stone names: 12 tribes & 12 apostles      (vs12,14).
  • Holy      activity: worship, fellowship, reign (22:3-5).

 The Holy New World

  • Wholly      new: "New heavens and earth -- no      more sea." (21:1 / 2Pet3:13)
  • This world      corrupted and segregated (temple). There nothing unclean (vs8, 27).
  • At      Home with the Lord. United in holiness. God's people are his, world w/o      end.

Are we looking for a city, whose builder & ruler is God?

"The Spirit and the Bride say, "Come!" (Rev22:17)
