We Aim to Please

We Aim to Please

"So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aima to pleaseb him." (2Cor5:9 ESV)

Examining the Words of this Admonition

aphilotimeomai = 1) to be actuated by love of honour (1Thess4:11)

2) to be ambitious / 2a) to strive earnestly, make it one's aim (Rom15:20)

beuarestos = 1) well pleasing, acceptable (not just barely good enough) - fully received.

Child-like Ambition

  • Something      every child is 'born' with -- the desire to please his parents.
  • "Children,      obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord." (Col 3:20 ESV)
  • Later in      life, we adults have a way of 'training ourselves out' of this trait.

Choosing WHOM to Please

  • Pleasing 1 of      2 opposing parties will displease the other one (Lk16:13).
  • "Do you      not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?" (Jas 4:4 ESV)
  • We are conflicted -- if not driven insane -- from trying to please      everyone.

Examples of Aiming to Please God

  • Abel:      "accepting his gifts" (Heb11:4) and Enoch: "having pleased God" (Heb11:5)
  • Paul: Gal1:10 not "seeking the approval of men" / 1Thess2:4 "we      speak...to please God"
  • Jesus: "I do      always those things that please Him" (Jn8:29)

Children of God seek to please Him in three areas: Learning, Living, Loving: Col1

Learning

  • v9 "be filled with the knowledge of his will in      all spiritual wisdom and understanding"
  • We must first know HOW to please the Lord. What does He want?
  • "you received from us how     you ought to live and to please God..."-- 1Thess4:1

Living

  • v10a "walk...fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in      every good work ..." (Col      1:10 ESV)
  • The goal of learning is living. Knowledge of truth must progress      to action.
  • This is "FULLY pleasing to Him:" yielding the fruit of all kinds      of good work.

Loving

  • v10b     ... and increasing in the knowledge of God. (Col 1:10 ESV)
  • Knowing (gnosis) God: closeness,      fellowship, intimate acquaintance.
  • v11 An Ascending spiral: learning about God, living in Him, loving      Him more...

Reason to Please Him

  • Q: Why does Paul say to please God should be our goal in our 1st     passage?
  • "For we must all appear before      the judgment seat of Chris.", (2Cor5:10 ESV)
  • Col1:12-14 It is HE Who delivers us, qualifies us,      translates us into the kingdom!

God makes it His goal to deliver all those who make it their goal to please Him.
