Mark5b (vs21-43)                                     Notes



21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the   other side,


back to the NW coast of Galilee


a great crowd gathered about him,


did not forget Him, though absent for a while.


and He was beside the sea.


If you wanted an audience with Jesus, you must go to the   country


22 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue,


manager of Jewish church affairs, one of several appointed   -- like our elders


Jairus by name,


named for Jair of the OT, mighty man of the tribe of Manasseh.   Note 1


and seeing Him, he fell down at His feet


looking, found Him, & paid great respect


23 and implored him earnestly, saying,


in desperate need, so begged seriously


"My little daughter is at the point of death.


Endearing reference -- from a distraught parent / poor   child lit: "in the holds of finality" // at the extremity of life


Come and lay your hands on her,


Believed Jesus must be present / practice to bestow   blessing, gift by placing hands... Note 2


so that she may be made well and live."


Faith that He has the power to impart health -- and so   life.


24 And He went with him.


Jesus left the crowd and another other work to follow this   man home.



Note1: Jair -- 'yaw-ere' = enlightener, luminous - from 'ore' = daybreak, fire. Son of Manasseh took country of Og, land of the giants (Num32:41 / Dt 3:14). Established 60 fortified cities in the Bashan  (Josh13:30 / 1Kgs4:13). A descendant founded another 23 cities in Gilead (2Chron2:22). Another Jair, a Gileadite who judged Israel 22 years (Judg10:3,5).


Note2: Laying on Hands:

  • Elders      and priests would impart sins of the people to the sacrificial lamb / goat      (Lev4:15 / 16:21).
  • And      pronounce sentence of guilt upon the blasphemer prior to stoning      (Lev24:14).
  • An      expression for apprehending, taking into custody (Mt21.46 / 26.50 / Lk20.19      / 21.12 / Acts12.1).
  • How      Jesus healed the sick and blind (Mk6.5 / 8.23&25 / Lk4.40 / 13.13
  • How      power of the spirit was imparted by apostles to early believers      (Acts8:17-19).
  • How      men blessed by spiritual men to begin their special work (Acts13:3 /      1Tim4.14).




And a great crowd followed Him and thronged about Him.


Yet, the way to Jairus' house full of people -- all with an   interest in Jesus


25 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood   for twelve years,


Ceremonially and socially unclean (Lev15:19-31) Note3


26 and who had suffered much under many physicians,


Turned in desperation to treatments that severe in some   ways


and spent all that she had,


Medical assistance, especially for difficult conditions,   is expensive.


and was no better but rather grew worse.


All to no help at all. The flesh drives us to says,   "Health is everything."


27 She had heard the reports about Jesus


News of His many healings -- power to cure any disease --   had spread widely.


and came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His   garment.


Her embarrassing condition prevented open audience. She   desired secrecy.


28 For she said, "If I touch even his garments, I will be   made well."


New formulation. She devised a way to her 'sozo:' save,   deliver, preserve. Note4.


29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up,


Jesus not made unclean, but the source of illness was   stopped


and she felt in her body that she was healed of her   disease.


her sense of illness magnified her perception of wellness   Note5.


30 And Jesus, perceiving in Himself that power had gone   out of Him,


Jesus (also) can sense His virtue. A unique expression:   aware exit of power.


immediately turned about in the crowd and said, "Who   touched my garments?"


Invites open confession from woman in the crowd -- her healing   will not be hidden.


31 And His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd   pressing around you,


Followers misunderstand. They also would sense being   jostled in a crowd.


and yet you say, "Who touched me?"


Jesus had specified: He sensed contact with his clothing   (even His inner virtue).


32 And He looked around to see who had done it.


Still observing crowd for her to come forward -- a tense   moment! Note6.


33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came   in fear and trembling


Abandoning secrecy -- impossible to deny what really   happened - she approached in great tremor...


and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. bow humbly and tell her entire story. Perhaps both   gasps and sighs from crowd.


34 And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you   well;


Extending warm association, Jesus addresses the main   attribute: Faith. Note7.


go in peace, and be healed of your disease."


Finally time for rest! Her entire life harmonized, with no   fear of re-occurrence.



Note3: This uncleanness from bleeding separated her from her people. Everything she touched was tainted. Relationship with a husband was cut off. Her worship was limited, as she was excluded from the synagogue and temple. In every way she was practically ostracized -- for 12 years.


Note4: Fairly rare method of healing. Jesus utilized it again when He returned to the Decapolis area (Mat14:35,36). It occurs a few times during the apostles work: Peter's shadow (Acts5:15,16) & Paul's handkerchief (Acts19:11,12). Would seem superstitious to pursue such means to healing, but God did work through things like this on occasion.


Note5: Modern fake healers lean heavily on their subjects' profession of unseen 'healings.' We have good reason to doubt what they cannot demonstrate -- and believe in what they are hiding. The woman's case here is a truly rare type of real healing from the Lord.


Note6: Mark often uses periblepo = 'looking about.' Mark3:5 / 3:34 / Here -- 5:32 / 9:8 / 10:23 / 11:11. He is quite observant of Jesus observing the people around Him. He has his eyes on Jesus' eyes. The eye-witness (Peter?) is watching Jesus watching others.


Note7: The Lord always gets to the real point, the core lesson. It was her conviction of Jesus' virtue and trust in His goodness that drew her on -- compelled her to follow this course of action. It would be her future faith that continued to transform her life.



35 While He was still speaking,


this marvelous encounter 'interupted' by the Lord's   previous mission


there came from the ruler's house some who said,


urgency of the news compelled them to go find the father


"Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any   further?"


Finality of death puts an end to any further pursuit of   health. Jairus heart must of sank.


36 But overhearing what they said,


Finishing one conversation, began the next...


Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not fear,   only believe."


1) Stop being afraid -- may seem cruel


2) Start really believing -- trust Jesus


37 And He allowed no one to follow Him


Jesus directed the following events: 1st  dismissed the crowd


except Peter and James and John the brother of James.


taking only the 'inner circle' with Him


38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue,


The Lord finally arrived at the man's home...


and He saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly.


to find funeral sorrow already in full swing.                                                 -   Note 8


39 And when He had entered, He said to them,


father speechless, Jesus takes over the abode.


"Why are you making a commotion and weeping?


purpose in sorrow: express heartbreak in loss, release   tension, and start healing


The child is not dead but sleeping."


But, not over a sleeping child! The Lord knows a higher   reality.


40 And they laughed at Him.


"They kept ridiculing Him." Thinking He was out of touch with   reality.


But He put them all outside and took the child's father   and mother


Time for a change of scenery. Guests outside -- parents   inside...


and those who were with Him in where the child was.


6 adults in the child's room (area). Only the closest and   spiritual surround her


41 Taking her by the hand He said to her,


Jesus grasps the lifeless hand and asks for her attention.   Talking to the dead? - Note9


"Talitha Cumi," which means, "Little girl, I say to you,   arise."


Familiar Aramaic spoken kindly: "Time to get up, sweetie."


42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking


W/o delay -- a resurrection! She more lively than after a   nap -- up & walking.


(for she was twelve years of age),


(Mark alone tell us the maiden's age.)


and they were immediately overcome with amazement.


"Astounded by great astonishment." The Lord had done   beyond highest hopes.


43 And He strictly charged them that no one should know   this,


Once again, His great power must be veiled. People not   ready to receive it.


and told them to give her something to eat.


Concerned for normal physical health. She hadn't eaten   right in days. Back to normal.



Note 8: Hiring funeral mourners. The prophets seems to refer to this practice (Jer9:17 / Amos5:16). Known as 'moirologists' (Latin/Greek: death-word) and 'keeners' (Gaelic: to cry or weep). This usually involves watching over the body with songs and poems before burial. Women most often oversee the passages of life: birth, sickness, death; so they may be the best mourners. They help the living express their grief.

The practice may seem odd to us, but in many ancient cultures considered an honor to the deceased. Q: Why do we buy cards to express our thoughts to others?


Note9: None dead / all live to God -- Lk20:38. He can summon them to Him at any time -- Rom4:17.


Q: Why are these two stories recorded in such an inter-twined fashion? What do these events have in common / in contrast?


  • Both      miraculous restorations done for females.
  • Both      12 years old -- the girl's total age, the woman's bleeding problem.
  • Both      involved contact with Jesus -- His clothes, His hands.
  • Jairus'      12 years of sunshine restored. The woman's 12 years of midnight vanquished      into dawn.
  • Jairus      a notable public man VS the woman unknown and unapproachable.
  • Jairus      well off, the woman poor -- spent all her living on fake healings.
  • Woman      thought to be healed privately -- made public.
  • Girl      would have been healed publicly -- her resurrection made private.
  • Both      lives marvelously restored to normal. How good the Lord is!
