Repent or Perish!

 

 

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Mat 4:17 ESV)

 

Word 'repent' occurs 10x in OT / 26x in NT. Word 'repentance' 20x in NT.

 

What IS Repentance?

Acknowledge Guilty Condition - Change of mind and heart (1Kgs8.47,48).

Leave behind Sinful Practice -- Put them in the Past (Ezek14.6 / 18.30-32).

Returning to good life / Doing what is Right -- a New Future (1Thess1.9&10)

 

Requires a Changed / New Life

Righteous Sorrow - Not "I got caught," but "I erred against God" (2Cor7.10).

No Repentance -- No Salvation! Turn or Die! (Ezek33.7-11 / Ax19.19).

Fundamental to Salvation (Heb6.1) - OR crucify Jesus all over! (v6).

 

Results of Not Repenting (10x in Rev)

Remnant of fellowship removed (Rev2.5).

Harder rebuke and chastening (Rev2.16).

Plagues, torment, separation (Rev2.21&22).

 

"If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword; he has bent and readied his bow..."

(Psa7:12 ESV) Motive1: Fear

 

WHY Not Repent?

Ignorant -- so the LORD instructs and warns (cf Ezek3.17-21).

Stubborn -- calloused, harder than stone (Jer5.3).

Proud -- holding on to selfish ways and pleasures (Rev16.9,11).

 

Repentance as a Gift -- Ax5.31 / 11.18

Opportunity -- Divine Patience (Rom2.4) & Proclamation (Mk6.12 / Ax17.30).

Acceptance -- Mercy & Forgiveness (Ax3.19 / 8.22).

Restoration -- Walking in ways of rightness (Mt3.8 / Ax26.20).

 

"God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance." (Rom 2:4 ESV) Motive 2: Love

 

The Gospel Call

Jesus is calling sinners to repent: Luke5.32 / 13.3&5 (Repent or Perish!) / 15.7

Proclaimed by the Apostles: "repent & be forgiven" (Lk24.47).

Believe, Repent, Be Baptized -- for the Remission of Sins: Ax2.38-41.
