Faith VS Fear

Faith VS Fear

"Do not fear, only believe." (Mk5.36)

How Fear Works

A survival & self-defense mechanism. Fight or flight. Counter threat.

Our greatest fears intrude upon our greatest needs -- as directed by our worldview.

Chronic Fear Paralyzes / Breeds inactivity / shuts the door of opportunity

OT Examples:

Hagar: "Let me not look" VS "Fear Not." (Gen21.17)

Isaac: "Contention, Enmity, You hate me." VS "Fear Not" (Gen26.24)

Israel: "Taken us away to die?" VS "Fear Not." (Ex14.13&14)

Who is Greater? My Enemy or My God?

Do not fear them; fear the LORD (Dt3.22 / Josh10.8)

When My Shepherd is with me, I fear no harm (Psa3.6 / 23.4)

When Yahweh is my light, whom shall I fear? (Psa27.1 / Prov14.26)

The Father of Worry

Fear of lack cause us to be anxious (Mt6.24). The problem: weak faith (v30)

The fearful disciples have little or no faith (Mt8.26 / Mk4.40)

Fear of lack is caused by lack of faith. And fear attacks our faith.

Watch it: Faith, the antidote for worry, is itself the target of fear. Guard faith!

Fear of God or Man?

"The fear of man brings a snare..." (Prov29.25)

Fear prevents faith (Jn7.13) & confession (Jn12.42)

And fear leads to 'secret discipleship' (19.38)

Disciples VS World

Do not fear your opponents or oppressors (Mt10.26,28,31 / Lk12.4,5,7,32)

Paul experienced these things (2Cor7.5)

Confidence in the Lord leads us to speak w/o fear (Phil1.14 / 2Tim1.7)

an evidence to unbelieving that they are against God (Phil1.28)

Saints told to "fear not" -- the crown of life awaits (Rev2.10)

The fearful and unbelieving are cast into the lake of fire (Rev21.8)

"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you." (Psa56.3)

Faith that Conquers Fear

"A faith that has not been tested is a faith that cannot be trusted."

Example: David fought lion & bear 1st  > Goliath (1Sam17.37)

Road to Victory. They conquered by Faith -- Not Fear (Heb11.23&27)

So we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper;

I will not fear; what can man do to me?"  (Hebrews 13:6)
