Luke - the Parables of Jesus

THE PARABLES

Jesus taught using Parables.  This is a summary of the Parables found in the Gospels, sorted by some of the lessons we can learn.  Read the scriptures listed to hear the lessons Jesus taught.  (Click HERE to open a Bible reading website.)  This is a longer study, but well worth the time.  Note that some of the Parables are only in one or two Gospels, and John did not repeat any of them.

The OLD LAW & the NEW (Lessons for the Jews of Jesus' day that we can learn from, too):

-            - Matthew 21:33-44; Mark 12:1-11; Luke 20:9-18

o  The Jews did not accept God's Son & they killed Him.  God punished them.  What will God do to us if we reject Jesus?

-            - Matthew 9:16 & 17; Mark 2:21 & 22; Luke 5:36 & 37-38

o  Jesus had a NEW way of living - It was not just a patch for the Old Law, but something brand new - the Old no longer applies.

-            - Matthew 13:52

o  We can learn from the Old Testament, but we follow the New Testament.

The KINGDOM, the CHURCH & TEACHING the GOSPEL:

-            - Mark 4:26-29

o  As Christians, we teach others.  We don't know how it all works, but obey & God will make the Church grow.

-            - Matthew 24:32-35; Mark 13:28-29; Luke 21:29-31

o  This Parable was a Prophesy that the Kingdom of God was coming... and it came!

-            - Matthew 13:3-8, 18-23; Mark 4:3-8, 14-20; Luke 8:5-8, 11-15

o  We want to have good 'soil' in our heart so that we will hear & study & obey God's Word. Then our faith can grow & we can teach others.

-            - Matthew 13:31-32 & 13:33; Mark 4:30-32; Luke 13:18-19 & 13:20-21

o  We may feel small, but as part of the Church, we can grow into something large enough to do great works for God & help many people.

 CHRISTIAN LIVING:

-            - Matthew 25:14-30; Luke 19:12-27

o  God expects us to use our talents for His work.  If we do, then God will give us even more talents.  If we do not use our talents, no matter how small they are, we will lose everything & be worthless.

-            - Matthew 21:28-32

o  God does not want us to just say we will obey Him, He wants us to actually do it!

-            - Matthew 20:1-16

o  If we obey God & do His work, we will get the Reward that He Promised us.  We should not judge how God treats others.

-            - Luke 17:7-10

o  Doing what God says in the Bible does not Earn us Heaven.  God is the master & He does not owe us anything.  Instead, we should work hard as God's servants in this life & be grateful for the blessings God promises & gives us.

-            - Matthew 5:14-15; Mark 4:21-22; Luke 8:16 & 11:33

o  Be a Good Example & Let others see it!

-            - Luke 13:6-9

o  Study & Pray so that you can grow in Faith & Do God's Work

-            - Matthew 13:44 & 13:45-46

o  If something is important enough to you, you would do anything or give up whatever you had to get it.  We give up our time to study to be able to go to college.  We give up our energy in sports to win the game.  What are we willing to give up for heaven?

-            - Luke 12:16-21

o  You cannot take it with you, but you can have it waiting when you get there.  Put your treasures in heaven.

-            - Luke 14:28-33

o  We must be willing to give up EVERYTHING to follow Jesus!  Nothing should be more important to us.

-            - Luke 16:1-8

o  This Parable tells of a Shrewd Manager.  That means that he was wise, but also careful with what he had.  As Christians, we should be careful with everything God gives us & use it wisely.

-            - Matthew 7:24-27; Luke 6:47-49

o  DO what Jesus says and you will live a strong, solid life. If you do not do it, you will fall.

-            - Luke 10:30-37

o  Love anyone who needs it & show that love by your Actions!

 PRAYER:

-            - Luke 11:5-8

o  If we want God's blessings, we have to look for them.

-            - Luke 18:2-8

o  God may not answer our prayers right away, but God does answer, so keep praying.

-            - Luke 18:10-14

o  When you pray, remember that God is the All-Powerful Creator of the Universe & you are just a sinner!

 HUMILITY & FORGIVENESS:

-            - Luke 14:7-14

o  These Parables teach Humility!  We are all sinners & are all blessed that God has allowed us to be saved.  WE should not think that we are something great, but we should know that GOD can make us great.

-            - Matthew 18:23-34

o  We Must Forgive people from our hearts if we want God to forgive us... and we owe God much, much more than anyone ever owed us.

-            - Luke 7:41-43

o  We have all sinned.  No matter how big or small your think your sin is, be sorry & be thankful that Jesus forgives you.

-            - Matthew 22:2-14; Luke 14:16-24

o  The Jews thought they were the chosen people of God forever.  They took it for granted & made excuses for their bad behavior.  Because of the Jew's attitude, the Gospel went to everyone.

The RELATIONSHIP between GOD and US:

-            - Matthew 18:12-14; Luke 15:4-7 & 15:8-10

o  God loves us so much!  When we are lost & alone, God is trying to bring us back to safety.  There is Rejoicing in Heaven when we come back. This Parable also tells us that we will sometimes be in the '99'!  This is where we want to stay.

-            - Luke 15:11-32

o  'Prodigal' means wasteful & reckless.  This is US when we sin.  God loves us, even when we are 'prodigal', but if we do not return to Him we miss out on His blessings & die pitiful & alone.  The older son is US, too, when we are trying to do right.  We must not only DO right, we have to THINK right. Have an attitude of Thankfulness for the love that God has given us & be willing to share that love with others

 BEING PREPARED & the JUDGEMENT:

-            - Matthew 24:45-51 & 25:1-13; Mark 13:35-37; Luke 12:42-48 & 12:35-40 & 16:19-31

o  Don't wait! Be ready now & stay ready!  We do not know when Jesus will come again. If we do not follow the Bible while we are alive, we will not get another chance.

-            - Matthew 13:47-50 & 13:24-30, 36-43 & 25:31-46

o  Christians have to live in this world with all kinds of evil around them.  Stay Strong.  At the Judgement, God will separate the evil (for punishment) & the faithful (for heaven).    So how can you be faithful?  Follow the link on the ACTS Bible-Man Page to find out!
