Joe S. Warlick vs A. G. Strain (Universalist) and C. L. Ballard (Methodist)
December 11, 1902
Rowlett, Texas

(By Joe S. Warlick)

During the first week in November, 1902, I held a four day debate with A.G. Strain, Universalist preacher. This debate was needed in the community, as the Universalists have a church there of some influence, and many people did not understand their doctrine. They thought it was some form of Christianity - a Christian denomination among others, deserving some Christian respect. They have some good people that gives them prestige. So the debate did some good.

Universalism was shown to be a form of infidelity and a very dangerous form at that, having a religious form. My opponent quit the discussion of the last proposition when it was half finished, and said he had nothing left to say. Mr. Strain is called their leading man in the state and their strongest debater, so they can't blame their defeat on their representative. The people generally were pleased with the debate and said the good done can not be easily calculated.

During the second week in November I held a four days debate with C. L Ballard, an able representative of Methodism in Texas. This debate was held at Rowlett, Texas. The preacher in charge at that point, enraged over the result of a successful meeting held by our brethren there, threw out some challenges, which our people readily took up.

Well, this debate came on and is now over, and the brethren think - and the outsiders say - that the Methodists surely regret that they provoked the discussion. We brethren feel that much good will result from the debate. Everything passed off well. We had no board of moderators, only two timekeepers. There was no point of order raised during the entire debate, and not a minute was lost. This was my 96th public religious debate and one among the most pleasant I have ever helped to hold.
