I debated C. C. Platte, a stumbling-stone "come outer," at Center Ridge, Conway Ct., Ark., for 5 days.
Platter affirmed:
(1) Water baptism was a Jewish ordinance and was abolished by Christ.
(2) Holy Ghost baptism is the one and only one baptism of the new covenant.
(3) What is called the "Lord's Supper," is the Jewish Passover and was abolished by Christ.
(4) The church of which I, C. C. Platte, am a member is scriptural in faith and practice. He framed each word of the proposition.
I began this debate not knowing how long it would continue. Mr. Platte refused to let me know how long he expected to keep up the fight. I had understood that he had said on a former occasion that he wanted 12 days; but at the close of the second day he tried to quit, though by fair promises he was induced to continue. He claims to have had much experience in debating, but does not remember the number of debates he has had; yet he will have to hold many more before he knows how to debate. He talks enough but there is no truth in what he says. His information consists solely of knowing where and how to find a few passages of scripture, by which he proposes to prove everything. He seems to know absolutely nothing about the history of various churches or their particular doctrines. He thinks that all the churches - Catholic and protestant - teach the same things. He was easily handled. A disinterested person said at the close of the debate that he did not think Platte had one sympathizer.
The brethren believe the debate will result in great good to the cause of truth.
