Mr. Riley aff: That the H.S. acts directly or beyond the written word. He argued that as sinners are born of the Spirit, hence the Spirit must come in direct contact with the sinner's heart. But bro. White showed that children of God (Christians) are the ones that receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:32); Gal.4:6, and not alien sinners (John 14:17) . Mr. Riley offered but few scriptures bearing on the subject, hence, made a weak effort to prove his affirmative; but did, perhaps, about was well as any ordinary Baptist could do.
Mr. Riley aff: That the child of God has eternal life in actual possession in this world. He did better on this proposition. He brought forth (John 3:36; John 5:24) and other texts that say the believer in Christ has eternal life. But bro. White clearly showed that we receive eternal life in the prospect or promise here and come into actual possession of it in the world to come. For proof he gave Mk. 10:30; I Tim. 6:12; I John 2:25 and other texts. Bro, White asked Riley: "If we receive eternal life in this world, then what kind of life do we receive in the world to come?" No answer came.
This debate was quiet and orderly. Young men can debate and act like gentlemen. They were governed by the "rules" in Hedge's "Logic." We consider bro. White fully capable of meeting any ordinary Baptist preacher.
