L. S. White vs E. J. Hibbird (7th Day Adventist)
February 28, 1907
Riverside, California

(By L. J. Jackson)

12 days at Riverside Calif.

Hibbird was indorsed by the conference of Seventh-Day Adventists of Southern Calif. E. J. Hibbird is a good scholar, a fluent and impressive speaker and showed great familiarity with the law and the sabbath as understood by Seventh-Day Adventists. He knew little about the doctrine taught by the church of Christ. In this bro. White held a decided advantage. He was as well versed in Adventist doctrine as Hibbins. During the six evenings when Hibbird was in affirmative, bro. White met him successfully at every strategic point.

The apostolic church and the sabbath were the issue in dispute. Hibbird refused to tell what the doctrine and practice of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church are, aside from the religious observance of the seventh day, other than to say that no church was apostolic which did not have a prophet; but he refused to name his prophet. Of course, he was swept from such a position like a man of straw by bro. White, and the prophesies of Mrs. Ellen G. White were exposed.

A comprehensive and masterly effort was made by bro. White in his first affirmative speech, setting forth in brief the doctrine and practice of the church of God. When Hibbird arose to reply, he said he agreed in the main to everything his opponent had said, and that their enemies had given them the name of "Seventh-Day Adventists" and they were afraid to repudiate it lest their enemies would not like it. Such was only fuel to feed the flame of burning eloquence that already flashed from the lips of the young man from Dallas, and it looked for a few minutes like Adventism would be utterly consumed. Hibbird could never extricate himself from the horns of the dilemma onto which bro. White's affirmative speech threw him.

There was keen interest with other churches. No man could do a better job than Hibbird on 7th day Adventist teaching, but he was outclassed by bro. White. The brethren think great good will be accomplished. This was the first religious debate held in Riverside and they liked it. Bro. White preached and baptized 39.
