R. C. White vs H. L. Robinson (Digressive - Christian Church)
May 3, 1928
Harmon Chapel, Johnson County, Tennessee

(By. C. J. Copeland)

April 13-14 at Harmon Chapel, Johnson County, Tenn.

There were two sessions each day of two hours each. Good order existed throughout the debate. The speakers showed a kind, brotherly spirit.

H. L. Robinson aff: That instrumental music in the worship has divine sanction. He argued two points: 1) David used instruments in the temple; 2) the Greek word "psallo" authorizes the use of the instrument. The latter point was discussed throughout the debate.

Bro. White showed that we are not under the law of the O.T. and that David did many things, such as burning incense, offering burnt offerings, and practicing polygamy, things we cannot do under the N.T. He also pointed out that the standard translations of the word translate "psallo" to sing, and not to sing and play.

The aff. speaker H. L. R.) Said the King James American Revised had not correctly translated this word. He read from the Clubb-Bales debate some of the lexicons quoted by Clubb. Bro. White showed that "psallo" in the N. T. Greek meant to sing, and that only, regardless of what it meant in other ages. He also pointed out that if "psallo" means ot sing and play, all must have instruments to worship. Bro. White pointed out that it is dangerous to claim that the Bible was incorrectly translated; for, if these words are not correctly translated, probably other parts of the Bible are incorrectly translated. He said that affirmative position would destroy the people's faith in the Bible.

Bro. White not only followed the affirmative and answered his arguments in a clear and emphatic manner, but also advanced several other reasons proving that instrumental music does not have divine sanction. He showed that it is not of faith and that to use it is not to worship inspirit and truth, and made other similar arguments.
