J. Porter Wilhite vs O. V. Swearingen (Missionary Baptist)
January 20, 1949
Newton, Mississippi

(By Oral Morgan)

J. Porter Wilhite debated O. V. Swearingen in a high school auditorium, Newton, Miss., Jan. 3-6.

The first two nights were spent on "faith" and "water baptism." The last two nights on the "Origin of he church."

Bro. Wilhite wrote I Pet. 3:21 on the blackboard, "that baptism doth also now save us," and under it wrote the Baptist teaching, that it does not save us, and asked Mr. Swearingen to erase the one he believed. He erased his own teaching and left I Pet. 3:21 on the board. After the discussion a Baptist lady asked: "Why did he not erase the other one?" I wondered too.

The Baptists will not challenge for another debate here. Bro. Wilhite challenged him for another debate on any subject. Bro. Wilhite is among the best, I am sure, in defending the truth. And the truth will not suffer in his hands.
