H. E. Winkler vs R. H. Pique (Methodist)
September 9, 1915
Helham, Tennessee

(By unknown)

The last two days Winkler aff: Bap. In order to R. O. S. He produced 10 strong arguments and pressed them with effect. In his argument on Mk. 16:15,16 he diagramed he sentence on the board and showed that nothing was affirmed of the "believer," nor of the "baptized," but the one that both "believeth and is baptized."

He then used Acts 2:38: "Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins." Christ had said to Peter that he would give him the keys of the kingdom, and what he bound on earth should be bound I heaven. On Pentecost, Peter bound "repentance" and "baptism" unto remission of sins. They are, therefore, bound in heaven for that purpose. One cannot receive remission without complying with that which is bound in heaven for that purpose. Therefore, repentance and baptism are unto remission.

Mr. Pique argued that the Ninevites were not baptized when they repented, and that bro. Winkler would not accept their repentance because they were not baptized. The woman of Luke 7:37-50, that washed Christ's feet with tears and wiped them with her hair, was forgiven without baptism, and we can be saved, too. Bro. Winkler reminded Pique that a testament is not in force until the one that made it dies, and Christ had not died when these things occurred Heb. 9:17). Mr. Pique actually argued that a will as testament, could be enforced during the lifetime of the one that made it. He did not mention the thief on the cross.

Mr. Pique would not take hold of many of the arguments produced by bro. Winkler, and before the debate had closed he proved to be not so strong as the Methodists had bragged.

Bro. Winkler was 26 years old.
