H. E. Winkler vs Thomas Jayner (Presbyterian)
October 28, 1915
Arat, Kentucky

(By W. S. Willis)

Bro. Winkler was preaching at Hanover church at Arat, Ky., was challenged by Thomas Jayner.

Mr. Jayner, 28 years old, knew all sectarian arguments on baptism. When bro. Winkler produced telling arguments and pressed them, Mr. Jayner just denied the Bible. He denied a proposition, saying that if it was that way, God lied; and the next day, on another subject, he tried to prove that it was "that way"; hence called Hod a liar.

For the first two days he denied there being any water baptism at all, and the 3rd day affirmed that "water baptism" is properly administered by "affusion." Bro. Winkler expressed surprise at Jayner's statement, saying that if water baptism was nailed to he cross, as he claimed to two days, and there was not water baptism now, his proposition ought to read: "Water baptism was properly administered by affusion, instead of is."

Bro. Winkler produced many convincing arguments that Jayner no effort to answer. He refused to tell is bbaptize is a translation or anglicized word. Jayner was handled from every angle.

The debate was held in a beautiful grove and was well attended. Normal Winkler moderated for his brother, H. E. His first time but he maintained control at all times. He called his own brother down when needed.
