H. E. Winkler vs Joe H. McWhirter (Digressive)
December 13, 1923
Monroe County, Kentucky

(By Unknown)

Held Nov. 9 at Phillipi church, Monroe Co. Ky.

For two days McWhirter aff: "The use of instrumental music in divine worship is scriptural." His first argument was that the ability to make music on instruments is a God given talent, and, therefore, it must be used in divine worship. He also used Rev. 14:2; 1:2; and I Cor. 14:7,8 (read verse 9). His main argument hinged around the word "psallo" and its derivatives in he N. T. McWhirter took the position that "hymns" and "spiritual sings" (Eph. 5:19) may be rendered without the instrument, but that one cannot obey the injunction to "psallo" without the mechanical instrument. McWhirter introduced Q. E. Payne's book and read from his misquotations of lexicons and of the "church fathers" as Clement.

Bro. Winkler exposed the flagrant misquotations of Payne's book and the weak position of a debater who introduces such unreliable testimony whether ignorantly or deliberately.

Sectarian sentiment in the audience was seen to be with McWhirter, because his position and arguments are the same that they make for unscriptural practices.
