H. E. Winkler vs Calvin Gregory (Baptist)
January 26, 1933
Nashville, Tennessee

(By H. M. Phillips)

Held at Green Street church, Nashville, Tenn., Nov. 28 (for 5 days).

Subjects: Baptism for remission of sins, possibility of apostasy. Winkler affirmed both propositions.

Calvin Gregory is a loud speaker. If he had the truth he would be a real force. But since he endeavored to uphold Baptist doctrine, he could not meet Winkler's Bible arguments. Bro. Winkler showed by the Bible and scholarship hat baptism to a penitent believer is in order to remission of sins. Gregory rested his proof on repentance and faith and made light of scholarship. He said baptism puts one into the visible body, but it is not necessary to go to heaven. Like most Baptists, he misrepresents this opponent and then makes his argument on the statement.

On apostasy, Gregory said one born of God could not sin; it is impossible. Bro. Winkler asked him if he ever prayed for forgiveness of sins; if so, he admitted that he sinned; if not, he sinned by not doing so, for Christ commanded that we pray for forgiveness. This he passed by, saying the one born of God could not sin. Bro. Winkler had a chart showing the number of people in the penitentiary and their religious belief, and there were by far more Baptists than any other. Bro. Winkler is well able to defend truth in discussion. Debates will do good when carried on in the right spirit.
