Both men affirmed: "The church to which I belong is scriptural." Skinner is a debater of fair ability. Boaz is a Christian preacher who is well known as an able debater and a Christian gentleman.
Bro. Boaz led for two days. After clearly defining his position, he laid down his foundation that would puzzle any Baptist to answer. Skinner tried hard to answer but failed. Then he began talking about Campbellism. On this point Boaz said: "I follow no uninspired man, and wherever I find a mistake made by Bro. Campbell, I renounce it the same as any other man uninspired." Skinner tried to produce a creed by which the disciples are governed in matters of church work; and when called on to do so he presented The Christian System by A. Campbell. Taking the book, Boaz showed that A. Campbell himself condemned human creeds. Bro. Boaz defended and sustained his positions to the satisfaction of all unbiased minds.
On third day Skinner took the lead and tried to prove his proposition. Bro. Boaz followed him in all his arguments. Skinner failed to show any scriptural authority for his position; and though he put forth his best efforts, he met an inglorious defeat. I acted as moderator for Boaz; we were the only Christian preachers there; there were nine Baptist preachers. All had a pleasant time.
