E. C. L. Denton vs I. N. Penick (Missionary Baptist)
January 23, 1902
Mt. Pelia, Weakley County, Tennessee

(By E. C. L. Denton, Milan, Tennessee)

A seven-day debate at M. Pelia, Weakley County, Tennessee. Subjects: Baptism for Remission of Sins, Apostasy, and Close Communion.

We had an interesting debate. On account of Mr. Penick's getting angry and saying ugly things to me, the discussions were at times very salty; but I kept my temper, closing my part of the debate pleasantly and with kind words. I regret that Mr. Penick closed his part of it in a bad humor, which we attributed to his consciousness of defeat. The Christians were jubilant over my efforts in defense of the truth and wee delighted in my conduct. They say our plea was fairly presented so none could fail to understand it. I left them in much rejoicing.
