B. L. Douthitt vs J. M. Hooker
December 13, 1925
Pottsville, Kentucky

(By Coleman Overby)

At Pottsville, Kentucky, December 20-23.

It was their third debate and interesting throughout. Each labored hard to defend cause. Hooker did not measure up to his work in preceding debates. Most of his time was given to side issues.

The most interesting thing in the debate by Bro. Douthitt was early in the debate, he had a chart picturing the two ways. (Matthew 7:13-14). He pressed the question: "Where is the Baptist Church - in the broad way or the narrow way? If in the narrow way, it makes baptism essential to salvation, since all, to be saved must enter the narrow way; and Baptists baptize into the Baptist Church" This was used on the design of baptism.

On Apostasy, Bro. Douthitt pressed the question: "If the Baptist Church is in the narrow way, what becomes of the man that is withdrawn from? Where does he go after withdrawal? If the Baptist Church is in the broad way, where does the member that has been withdrawn from go - to the narrow way? If so, why not withdraw from all?" Though pressed relentlessly, Hooker would not answer.

Large crowds attended. Many gospel preachers - 6 Baptists have been baptized as a result of debate. Bro. Douthitt's work was highly commendable.
