B. L. Douthitt vs John B. Clark (Missionary Baptist)
August 15, 1929
Macedonia near Mayfield, Kentucky

(By Coleman Overby)

July 23-26 at Macedonia, near Mayfield, Kentucky.

General Church Proposition. John R. Clark was selected by the Baptists of Dublin, Kentucky. He did his best. Thinking they had a great debater, they came the first day in numbers. But their ranks thinned day by day as the discussion continued. Mr. Clark is the bitterest man against the Church of the Lord in the ranks of the Baptists today. He has majored in misrepresentations, in vulgarity, in evil suggestion, in his tirade against what he pleases to call "Campbellism." He hates the Lord's Church like Saul of Tarsus. The marked difference is: Saul was honest and was converted, but there is no hope for John R. Clark. In argument, he is the weakest of their debaters. He is weak and helpless as a babe when facing a scriptural argument.

B. L. Douthitt was equal to the occasion. His arguments were presented in an attractive manner, and his speeches were free from such personalities as often mar the purpose of religious discussion. At no time did he indulge in mud- slinging. He completely answered all arguments presented by his opponent and shamed him for his base tactics. It was clearly shown that the Baptist cause cannot prosper in honorable controversy. John R. Clark cheapens debating by his methods and it hurts him.

The attendance ranged from 600 to 1,000. The weather was hot and all sessions were held each afternoon.

Brethren: T. G. Curd, Benton Carman, David Thompson, Lorenzo Davis, T. C. Wilcox, Floyd A. Decker, Alonzo Williams, E. V. Wilson, Robert McGregor, Fara Harper, Jewell Norman, Dickie, J. S. Jones, A. J. Veteto, Adron Doran, Alvin Reaves and Coleman Overby.

The debate closed in a great way. At invitation song, two obeyed gospel; one of these was a Baptist. The next day at place of baptism three came forward; one of these was a Baptist. All these came as a result of the debate.
